 ‘Sparrows  麻雀‘  (2026)

When translated, ‘mahjong’ means sparrows. It refers to the clacking sounds of the tiles being shuffled, resembling the chattering of sparrows.

Sparrows are social birds that travel together to survive– similar to the way diasporas move.

This installation explores the ways in which diasporic members organize mahjong games as a way to create community, negotiate identity and counter dominant political discourses.

The audience is invited to come and watch the short film, sit at the mahjong table, chat and play in the gallery.
